General reading, not a visit. What we write about warning signs, clay soils, past rainfall and the 2002 USDA soil survey of Brazos County is meant to help you ask better questions. It cannot tell you what sits under one particular house or how that house is behaving. Answering that means someone has to stand on the lot and look, whether a foundation contractor, a geotechnical professional or a licensed professional engineer.

Cost figures. Each cost row carries its source and year. Every row is a national range drawn from a home-cost site. No Bryan, Brazos County or Texas figure is used. The rows and the calculator's results are not a price, quote or bid from us. The calculator lists its own assumptions, and a written estimate for a real house can come in well above or below anything shown here.

Quiz results. The signs quiz groups answers into three broad results. That is not a diagnosis, not a look at a home and not a finding that work is called for.

Rules and permits. Our notes on Texas law, including the lack of a state license for foundation repair, and on city permit and registration steps, such as College Station's own rule for foundation repairs and Caldwell's engineer-stamp rule, come from public sources read in October. Rules and office practice change, and none of these notes is legal advice. Check with the office that handles your address, or a lawyer, before you act on one.

Offices we name. We mention the City of Bryan, the other cities and counties on our pages, the State of Texas and its agencies so you know whom to contact. Not one of them endorses us, reviews our pages or works with us in any way.
